A Secure Application Process
When applying with Earnest, you’ll be asked to link several accounts by entering your username and password. This information is not stored or accessible to anyone, including Earnest employees.
First, we ask you to connect your bank and investment accounts, which provides us with your transaction and financial history. This information lets us see good spending habits and savings patterns.
We also ask you to connect your LinkedIn account so we can pre-fill your application with your education and employment history. As you continue your loan application, you’ll be asked to securely upload a photo of a government-issued photo ID.
We know we’re asking for sensitive information via your connected accounts, and we have built a system to protect your personal information.
Our security safeguards are complex, but it can be helpful to imagine your outside financial accounts as your personal journal. We can read the journal, but can not pull any pages out or write an entry into it. Only you can give us access and we never store your usernames and passwords to these outside financial accounts in our system.

Your Information is Never Shared
Under federal and state law, we are required to maintain the personal and financial information that you provided us as part of the loan application process, whether you completed the loan application or not. This is to ensure that we engage in fair lending practices. However, under no circumstances do we ever sell your information (and that includes your email address) to third parties.

Protecting your information and cyber security at large is a mission we are dedicated to improving all the time. Here are some additional tips when transmitting information online:
- Never send sensitive information (usernames, passwords, your Social Security number) through less secure methods like email and text message.
- Before entering any information online, review the website or app’s security policy.
- Do not install or download any software if you can not confirm the legitimacy and safety of it.
